Jesus Institutes the Eucharist

The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and after He had given thanks, broke it and said, " This is My Body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me." In the same way, after the supper, He took the cup, saying, "This cup is the New Covenant in My Blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

Every time, then, you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim and death of the Lord until He comes!

Reflection: Think of the times we have failed to appreciate Jesus' gift of self and His loving presence in the Eucharist. What can we do to respond to Jesus' sacrifice?

Reading The Bible

Reading the Bible is different from reading an ordinary book. With an ordinary book, we usually begin on the first page and read on the end to be able to understand the story fully. With a Bible, this is not necessary. We may read only a part of it and still be able to make full use of the part we have read.

As we have learned already, the contents of the bible are arranged under two headings, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament has 46 books classified into four divisions. The New Testament has 27, classified into two divisions.

Sometimes the name of a book is written in short form.
For example: The book of Genesis=Gen or Gn
The book of Revelation= Rev or Rv
Sometimes at the end of a Bible story or passage, a reference note is made to the place where that story or passage may be found in the Bible. This reference note tell us in which part of the Bible we can find the particular story or passage. For example, if we see the note Exodus 20:1-28 this means we must look for the book title Exodus, then turn to chapter 20 of this book and look for verses 1 to 28. The reference John 1:15 will be found in the New Testament in the book of John, chapter1, Verse 15.

The Word of God

We listen to the readings from the Bible. The readings reminds us of God's saving love and his of promise to send a Messiah. They also remind us of all the good things God has done for us. We respond by singing psalms about God.

The Apostles must have been sad and frightened after the death of Jesus. To forget their sadness and fear, they must have exchanged stories about the things Jesus told them in the past. They must have sung psalms, too, to keep their spirits up.

Why to Study the Bible

As we have learned, many events told in the Bible are based on historical happenings. However, unlike other books of history, the Bible does not focus on accurate descriptions of these events. Instead, the writers of the Bible concentrate on the meaning of these events. They read, in the events, the Word of God and his intervention. They teach us lessons about God and His intervention. They teach us lessons about ourselves, that we can make ourselves better and our world a better place to live in if we follow the teachings of Jesus.

A study of the Bible, therefore, leads us to an awareness of the plan of salvation that God worked out for us to free us from all types of evil. Hopefully, this awareness will inspire us to live a life that will make it possible for us to be happy with God in heaven forever.
Through the Bible, we try to find answers to questions about present events like widespreadd pollution and global misunderstanding. We discover that God continues to speak to us as He spoke to the prophets. We recognize signs of His intervention.
The Bible is the Word of God to all mankind. Reading God's Word and thinking deeply about it helps us to know and love God more. It makes us want to pattern our lives according to what we learn from the Holy Scriptures.
The Bible can help us grow if we do the following:
1. Study the Bible.
Take time to read it. Listen carefully when it is read in church.
2. Share the Bible.
Read and discuss it with friends and members of the family.
3. Love the Bible.
Pray the Bible prayers and listen to the Word of God as it affects you in your daily life.
Studying the Bible can be one of our most interesting activities. There is always more to learn and think about. And before we know it, God's Word has already become part of our lives.
This is why we read, study and treasure the Bible as the most precious book of all time.
